MUSIC LESSON POLICIES
(Revised August 2021)
MONTHLY TUITION
Here are the 30-minute lesson new rates for monthly tuition
Live weekly lessons: $90 per month
Virtual weekly lessons: $85 per month
Live Bi-weekly lessons: $50 per month
Virtual Bi-weekly lessons: $45 per month
Live every other week, 2 instr: $100 per month
Virtual every other week, 2 instr: $95 per month
IN HOME (I come to you) lessons: $95 per month
Individual lessons are $25 per lesson
Monthly tuition costs remain the same regardless of national/school holidays. I try to be fair. When there is a month with 3 lessons, there maybe another with 5 lessons coming up...
Please remit payment at the first lesson of the month. Pay by check (made out to Joanne Andrus), cash, or bill pay through your bank. You may pay with Venmo @Andrus-Music. The tuition is the same regardless of the number of lessons for that month. Please add a $5.00 LATE FEE if you pay after the 10th of the month. Your timely payment is appreciated.
MISSED LESSONS
Make up lessons will only be offered when 24-hour notice is given for illness. Make-ups will not be given for any other reason. If you cannot attend your lesson, please let me know as soon as possible. (If I am able to switch your lesson to another time slot I will, but there is no guarantee. I will try…) I have reserved your student’s lesson time for them. How you use that time is up to you. Tardiness, being ill-prepared and skipping lessons without informing me are reasons to look at your commitment.
Please do not send your student when they are sick. I am happy to do a virtual lesson with your sick student if they are up to it. If I am ill, I let you know as soon as possible and reschedule or pro-rate tuition for the next month. IF I'm up to it, I will teach virtually and give you a credit towards the next month if you desire.
Please give me at least 2 weeks-notice if you intend to terminate lessons. I appreciate your courtesy in giving me adequate notice.
MUSIC THEORY ASSIGNMENTS & TECHNIQUE EXERCISES
Each student will receive a weekly music theory assignment and/or ½ steps to mark. The sooner in the week that the written work is done, the better the knowledge is retained. Please get it done early in the practice week. Time spent doing theory, 1/2 steps and technique exercises DOES count as practice time, so be sure to record it.
Vocal exercises must be consistently practiced to improve the technique you are working on. Apply what you learn from the exercises to your music.
SCALES
Students assigned scales must write the scale(s) and practice them at least 5 times each practice session. Repetition is the key to scale mastery. At the completion of writing and playing all the major and minor scales, a personalized trophy will be presented to the student at a recital. Woohoo!!! It is a great accomplishment!
PRACTICING
For success in musical studies, the student must spend adequate time practicing the assigned material. Students should practice ALL music, not just the “fun stuff” they want to play. Record only practice time on the specific music for your lessons unless you have permission from me to include other music.
A practice chart is written in the student's notebook each week where they should record the minutes spent practicing and doing written assignments. Please record it each day practicing is completed. Using a timer is great! This can ensure that the time expectation of the parent and teacher are accurately accomplished and encourages good practice habits.
The amount of daily practice time expected depends on the level of the student…10-20 min. for beginners, 20-40 minutes for early beginners and 40-60 min. for intermediate students. The more consistent the daily practice, the greater progress will be made. If the student doesn’t practice over a period of time, we will discuss possible solutions.
MUSIC
At times I will ask you to purchase your own music, though most of the time it will be purchased for you. Please reimburse me for the music with your next month’s tuition OR in a separate check when it is received.
NOTEBOOK
Students are required to bring their assignment notebook each week with their practice time recorded. Also, please be sure students read the notes I write. By reading the suggestions for effective practice, they will be more likely to make adequate progress, passing off music in a timely manner. Sometimes the same problems are repeated because practice suggestions are not followed.
YOUTUBE
There are many great videos that may be helpful to your student. Suggestions will be sent home in the notebook periodically so please assist your student. Sometimes, videos show someone performing a song they are learning. Others maybe on my YouTube channel which is AndrusMusic (all one word!) The TIPS AND TRICKS videos help with tuning, holding instruments, technique, bow maintenence, etc. Other videos demonstrate songs.
PERFORMANCES - usually 4 per year!
ALL students are expected to perform in recitals and Master Classes! Students should prepare well in advance for the best performance experience. Dress in nice clothing – no jeans, please. Recitals held in the fall and spring are more “formal”. For violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano, I won’t require more than one piece to be memorized. Vocalists should memorize thier song(s). Vocal numbers should be well rehearsed with practice CD, online accompaniment or an accompanist, which you must provide. Summer and Christmas Master Classes are more casual (usually student and one parent attend). I will give you adequate notice of performances so that you can make arrangements to participate.
SUMMER LESSONS
Students are expected to continue with lessons throughout the summer. If they choose not to continue, a spot CANNOT BE GUARANTEED for the fall. We can discuss possible alternatives if summer vacations are long. Summer is a great time to make lots of progress! I usually offer an exciting summer incentive program (earn musical money, Musical Olympics or Triathlon) to motivate the students to practice hard. It is really FUN!
MISCELLANEOUS
All students need a well-maintained instrument, as well as a shoulder rest, rosin, good quality strings, etc. Pianos should be tuned properly and be in good working order. Guitarists need a thumb pick that fits them well. Please have a metronome available. All violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano students should have short fingernails! Nails should be cut flush with the fingertips.
Please be on time to your lessons! We have such a short time to work together and I don’t want your student to miss a minute of it! I look forward to teaching your student and hope you will call or email me with any questions or concerns. Communication is extremely important in the success of lessons!
Trading services is a great option.I'm open to trades--let's talk!
Thanks for your support in making the most of your/your student's music lessons!!!
